Samsung is bringing ambient sensing to SmartThings

Samsung has announced plans to enhance its SmartThings platform by integrating ambient sensing capabilities into its connected appliances and smart home devices. This development is part of Samsung’s “AI for All” vision, aiming to simplify home technology through artificial intelligence.

Key Features of Ambient Sensing:

  • Activity Recognition: Devices such as Samsung televisions, Music Frame speakers, and Family Hub refrigerators will utilize motion and sound sensors to detect daily activities like cooking, exercising, and sleeping. This enables SmartThings to create personalized automations tailored to user routines.
  • Personalized Experiences: For instance, motion sensors in Samsung TVs can identify specific exercises, provide guidance on form, and suggest optimal workout durations. Additionally, if a user sits in a chair, SmartThings can automatically adjust the lighting and room temperature to enhance comfort.
  • Health and Wellness Support: The system can detect activities such as using a hair dryer and prompt a connected robot vacuum to clean up hair strands. It can also recognize when a pet jumps onto furniture and activate an air purifier to remove allergens, contributing to a healthier living environment.

Privacy Considerations:

Samsung emphasizes that all data collected from these sensors will be stored locally on the SmartThings hub, ensuring user privacy by preventing data from being uploaded to the cloud.

Map View Enhancements:

In addition to ambient sensing, Samsung is updating its Map View feature. This visual interface allows users to interact with connected devices through a layout of their home on their phone, computer, or TV. The upcoming generative AI upgrade will offer a deeper understanding of a home’s unique layout and environment, adding more personalization to the SmartThings experience.

These updates are scheduled to roll out in 2025 and 2026, reflecting Samsung’s commitment to creating smarter, more responsive home environments through advanced AI integration.
