More teens report using ChatGPT for schoolwork

Recent studies indicate a significant increase in the use of ChatGPT among teenagers for schoolwork. A Pew Research Center survey found that 26% of U.S. teens aged 13 to 17 have utilized ChatGPT for assignments, doubling from 13% in 2023.

The survey also revealed demographic variations:

  • Black and Hispanic teens reported higher usage rates at 31%, compared to 22% among white teens.
  • Familiarity with ChatGPT influenced usage, with 56% of teens well-acquainted with the tool using it for schoolwork, versus 18% among those less familiar.

Regarding the acceptability of using ChatGPT for different tasks:

  • 54% of teens found it acceptable for researching new topics.
  • Only 18% considered it appropriate for writing essays.

These findings highlight the growing role of AI tools like ChatGPT in education, prompting discussions about their ethical use and impact on learning.
