Chinese AI company MiniMax releases new models it claims are competitive with the industry’s best

Chinese artificial intelligence startup MiniMax has unveiled a series of new AI models, asserting that they rival the industry’s leading systems. The Shanghai-based company introduced the MiniMax-01 large language model (LLM) family, which includes:

  • MiniMax-Text-01: A general-purpose foundational model designed for text-based applications.
  • MiniMax-VL-01: A multimodal model capable of processing and generating both text and visual content.

In benchmark tests, MiniMax claims that these models perform comparably to top-tier AI systems, excelling in areas such as mathematical problem-solving, domain-specific knowledge, instruction adherence, and minimizing factual inaccuracies.

This announcement comes on the heels of Hangzhou-based DeepSeek’s release of its open-source V3 model in December 2024, which set new standards in the field. The competitive landscape of China’s AI market is prompting both established tech giants and emerging startups to rapidly advance their offerings.
