AMD agrees to buy World Labs to fill out its AI stack

This is where World Labs fits into AMD’s ecosystem, according to Parv Sharma, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research. “World Labs builds AI that understands space, where models need to understand geometry, physics and time, unlike LLMs, which understand languages. These world models are used for training in physical AI (robotics, autonomous vehicles, industrial simulation, AR/VR, gaming, digital twins), potentially one of the next multi-trillion-dollar opportunities,” he said.

After the close of the deal, which values World Labs at $8.2 billion, its CEO Fei-Fei Li will become chief scientist, reporting to AMD CEO Lisa Su.

For AMD’s Su, “Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,” she said in a news release. “Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise. Together, we can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power the next generation of AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem.”
